Dom Perignon: A Legendary Story

Dom Perignon

Cuvée Dom Pérignon was named after the monk Dom Pérignon, who died in 1715 and contributed to the development of modern champagne wine. The first cuvée, made with a 1921 wine, was marketed from 1935 onwards, based on an idea by Laurence Venn

For champagnes in general, 1921 was the best year ever, the second-best vintage being 1928. The first beneficiaries of the “Dom Pérignon 1921” cuvée were 150 customers of “Simon Bros & Co”, Moët’s British importer, for whom 300 bottles were delivered. Its quality was so appreciated that orders poured in and 100 cases were quickly shipped to the United States. Billionaire James Buchanan Duke, founder of the American Tobacco Company, ordered 100 bottles for himself. It was from this order that the 17 bottles sold at auction at Christie’s in New York in June 2004 came from the cellar of Doris Duke, the billionaire’s daughter. According to Richard Geoffroy1, Dom Pérignon’s cellar master, this 1921 vintage “developed a unique bouquet of sandalwood, vanilla and praline”.
Always a vintage champagne, Dom Pérignon is only produced in exceptional years from grapes harvested in the same year, unlike non-vintage champagnes, which are produced from grapes harvested in different years.
In total, only 46 years have been vintage since 1921. It has been possible to vintage three consecutive years only three times: in 1969, 1970, 1971, in 1998, 1999, 2000, and in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006. The 2003 vintage, released in 2012, is the 38th Dom Pérignon vintage to be marketed after just over eight years in the cellar. This vintage was announced on December 7, 2011. A year and a half later, in May 2013, the house announced its 39th vintage, the 20042 vintage.
